UK low emissions zones: what and where are they?

CAZs

Air pollution has negative effects on health, and is a major cause for premature all-cause mortality. It is linked to many respiratory diseases, lung cancer, asthma, stroke and development of coronary heart diseases.

In the UK, one of the leading causes of air pollution is transportation. Some areas across the UK fail to meet the national air quality objectives, so for that reason cities are taking measures to help reduce pollution levels and improve air quality.

Clean Air Zone (CAZ) is being introduced to restrict the most polluting vehicles from entering certain areas of a city, incentivising people to switch to cleaner alternatives.

Low Emission Zone (LEZ) is an area where only certain vehicles are allowed to enter based on their emissions standards.

Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) is an area in central London where vehicles which don’t meet the ULEZ emission standards are required to pay a daily charge to drive within the zone.

Zero Emission Zone (ZEZ) is an area where polluting vehicles are prohibited from entering or permitted to enter upon payment of a daily charge.

We have created an interactive map showing the CAZs, LEZs, ULEZ and ZEZ across the UK.
