Oxford’s Zero Emission Zone

Zero emission

The first Zero Emission Zone (ZEZ) will go live in Oxford on Monday, 28th February.

Oxfordshire County Council and Oxford City Council are launching ZEZ to improve the air quality in Oxford. The ZEZ is being introduced in two phases – the first phase is a small pilot area in the city centre of Oxford and in the second phase the zone will be expanded to cover wider area of the city.

Number plate recognition cameras are being installed to enforce the ZEZ scheme.

The charges vary from £2 to £20 per day depending on your vehicle’s emissions. Charges will apply from 7am to 7pm, seven days a week, all year round.

The ZEZ covers the following streets in the city centre: New Road (Between Bonn Square and its junction with Castle Street), Bonn Square, Queen Street, Cornmarket Street, New Inn Hall Street, Shoe Lane, Market Street (From its junction with Cornmarket, extending east for 40 metres), Ship Street, St Michael’s Street.

Discounts are available for:

  • Blue Badge holders
  • Disabled tax vehicles
  • Selected low emission hybrid private hire and Hackney carriage vehicles
  • Residents in the zero emission zone
  • Health or care workers
  • Community transport vehicles
  • Businesses in the zero emission zone
  • Students in financial hardship moving in or out of the zero emission zone

It is recommended to apply for a discount at least 10 working days before entering the zone. You can apply for a discount here.

Exemptions

If your vehicle is zero emission you don’t need to apply for an exemption – you can drive through the zone without incurring a daily charge. The following vehicles are also exempt from Oxford ZEZ charge:

  • Hackney carriages licensed by Oxford City Council
  • Registered local buses
  • Emergency service vehicles
  • Historic vehicles
  • Military vehicles
  • Agricultural and similar vehicles (includes tractors, mowing machines, steam-powered vehicles, snowploughs and gritters)
  • Special vehicles (includes mobile cranes, pumping vehicles, digging machines, road rollers, and works trucks, e.g. forklift trucks)
  • Hearses
  • Certain recovery vehicles
