No changes to the frequency of the MOT testing regime

MOT testing

The UK Government has concluded its consultation on the MOT testing regime and has decided not to make any changes. The consultation, which was launched in January last year, aimed to strike a balance between the cost to motorists, road safety, advancements in vehicle technology, and addressing vehicle emissions.

Various proposals were considered during the consultation, including altering the frequency of vehicle safety tests and enhancing emissions monitoring. One suggestion was to extend the first MOT requirement from three years to four years in order to save money.

However, it has been announced that no changes will be made. This means that new cars, vans, or motorcycles will still undergo their first MOT three years after registration. Subsequent tests will then be conducted annually thereafter.
