New laws to enhance the accessibility and speed of charging electric vehicles

New laws have been approved that will benefit millions of electric vehicle (EV) drivers.

One key aspect is the requirement for transparent and easily comparable prices across chargepoints. This means that EV drivers will have clear information about the cost of charging their vehicles at different locations, making it easier for them to plan and budget accordingly.

A large proportion of new public chargepoints will offer contactless payment options too.

Providers will also be required to open up their data, so drivers can easily find an available chargepoint that meets their needs. This will enable apps, online maps, and in-vehicle softwares to provide information on available chargepoints, their charging speeds, and operational status.

These new laws will help EV drivers to have a better experience when using the public charging infrastructure, making it more accessible and hassle-free.

The UK Government has also published its response to the Future of Transport Zero Emission Vehicles consultation, confirming its intention to introduce laws to require local transport authorities to produce local charging strategies if they have not done so as part of local transport plans. This will ensure that every part of the country has a plan for EV charging infrastructure.
