How to keep your vehicle secure

Having your vehicle broken into or stolen can be a very stressful and time consuming experience. Vehicle crime levels are relatively high, so it is important to keep your vehicle secure at all times. In our fast-paced life we often overlook some of the rather obvious must-do routine tasks which makes us more likely to be exposed to risks.

Prevention is the first step in order to avoid becoming a vehicle crime victim, so here are some of the tips on how to keep your vehicle secure.

Nowadays, most vehicles come with an integrated alarm system, designed to respond to different security threats. Unlike vehicle alarms, the immobiliser does not signal of a potential threat, instead it prevents the vehicle from starting if the correct key is not used. This being said, if an immobiliser is fitted, thieves won’t be able to hot-wire your vehicle.

To enhance vehicle security, having a tracking system in place can help. By doing so, you can track and trace your vehicle at all times. You can even use an old phone to hide in your vehicle and install a tracking app.

You shouldn’t leave valuables in your vehicle, when you leave your car parked. Even if you go out of the vehicle for a few minutes, it is highly recommended to keep valuables out of sight.  Thieves sometimes break into cars, just because they can spot a valuable item inside the vehicle.

Another important consideration is to park your vehicle in a well-lit area, preferably with CCTVs or security guards. In most cases, thieves target vehicles that are parked in areas where the crime is less likely to draw attention.

Always check if your vehicle is locked and windows are up. It is also very important to make sure that you keep your keys secured. Sometimes thieves can access houses with the purpose of finding vehicle keys. Therefore, it is recommended not to keep your vehicle keys next to the entrance door or windows.  If you have a keyless entry fob ensure this is kept as far away from your parked vehicle as possible, because criminals can use relay boxes to enter your vehicle.

It can take a moment for a vehicle to get stolen, so don’t leave your engine running even if you need a minute to drop something off into your house.

What to do in the event that your vehicle has been stolen?

If you are certain that your vehicle is being stolen, the very first thing you should do is call the police. The longer you wait, the less likely it is that your vehicle will be found. If you dial 101, you will get through to your local police station and you will need to provide the following details:

  • Vehicle registration number
  • Make and model
  • Colour of the vehicle

The police will inform the DVLA about the theft as well as if the vehicle is found.

You will then receive a reference number which you will need when you contact your insurance provider. To find out more information click here
