Green Number Plates for Electric Vehicles

As of December 2020, green number plates are available and can be fitted on new and old zero emission vehicles (ZEVs). With this in mind, hybrids and plug-in hybrids are not eligible.

The introduction of these plates aims to raise awareness of the zero-emission future of the UK and promote cleaner and greener transportation, which is part of the UK Government’s Road to Zero Strategy. While the green number plates are optional, the ZEVs drivers are encouraged to switch, as there are different initiatives in place, as well as to spread awareness of EVs on the road and their increasing number.

The UK Government has also announced a £12million funding into the development of greener vehicles and to help towards the improvement of EV charging technologies.

 

 

The green number plates are distinguished from standard number plates, as they feature a green vertical stripe on their left-hand side.

The plates are also more environmental friendly, as they are 99% recyclable.

One of the benefits of having green number plates is that your EV is going to be easy to identify. With this in mind, you will be able to take advantage of local council initiatives such as cheaper parking, free entry into clean air zones and access to bus lanes, where applicable.

To get green number plates, you would need to prove your identity to the supplier, as well as to show that your vehicle is eligible (you can present V5). Different suppliers can be found on: Find your nearest number plate supplier

Please note that all new EVs will be fitted with green number plates, and you need to notify your car dealer if you wish to have the standard plates, before the vehicle is registered.

Please be aware that number plate scams are increasing. Incorrectly displayed number plates are illegal, therefore, purchase your plates only by trusted suppliers.
