The Tyne Tunnel – a new cashless system

The Tyne Tunnel has switched to a new cashless system aimed to reduce congestion and travel time.

Drivers no longer need to stop to pay at toll booths, instead motorists can drive straight through as Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras will detect the Vehicle Registration Number.

The toll charges are the following:

Motorbike or Disabled registered – FREE

Car, Van, or Bus less than 3.5 tonnes – £1.90

LGV, Van or Bus over 3.5 tonnes – £3.70

If you choose to pay via a Pre-Paid account, you can save 10% on all journeys. More information can be found below.

You can pay the toll charge either via a Pre-Paid account and save 10% on all journeys, or pay for your passage by midnight the day after your journey or up to 12 months in advance either on their website, app, automated telephone payment line on 0191 574 0030 or at a PayPoint retailer.

If you fail to pay the toll charge you will receive an Unpaid Toll Charge Notice (UTCN).

If Tyne Tunnels doesn’t receive the toll charge by midnight the day after your journey, DVLA will be contacted to provide the name and address of the registered keeper of the vehicle.

If you receive an UTCN, the amount which you need to pay is £60 + your toll amount (reduced to £30.00 + your toll amount if paid within 14 days of the UTCN generated date).

You can apply for a toll exemption account if you are a Blue Badge holder or you are entitled to nil road tax. To find out more information, or apply for an exemption visit Toll exemptions.
