Portsmouth’s Clean Air Zone

Clean Air Zone traffic sign

Portsmouth’s Clean Air Zone (CAZ) will be launched on 29 November 2021, as some areas of the city have levels of pollutants that are higher than the safe legal limits.

The air pollution remains one of the major causes for many respiratory diseases such as asthma and lung cancer. Statistics show that Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) is linked to 36,000 early deaths in the UK each year. Improving the air quality is considered as one of the main priority on the UK government’s agenda, so for that reason the levels of air pollution are closely monitored.

Non-compliant vehicles are Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs), buses and coaches, taxis and private hire vehicles that

  • Do not meet Euro 6 emissions standards if they are diesel.
  • Do not meet Euro 4 emissions standards if they are petrol.

Charges will not apply to private cars, motorcycles and vans.

The Portsmouth’s CAZ will cover an area south west of the city, including the city centre. The CAZ is not going to cover areas on M27 and A27.

The daily charge for non-compliant taxis and private hire vehicles will be £10, and £50 for HGVs, buses and coaches.

There are both national and local exemptions available for drivers. For example, you may be also able to apply for a ‘sunset period’, which will allow you more time to retrofit or replace your non-compliant vehicle.
