Plans to expand London’s ULEZ in 2023

London ULEZ

The Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has announced plans to expand the city’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ). He has asked Transport for London (TfL)  to consult on extending the scheme’s boundary to cover the whole of greater London by 2023.

The ULEZ expansion will mean that drivers who don’t meet the emission standards will have to pay £12.50 per day to drive within the zone.

In London, air pollution remains the largest environmental risk to health for its residents, so the zone was expanded last October to include up to the North Circular Road (A406) and South Circular Road (A205), with the North and South Circular Roads themselves not in the zone.

Sadiq Khan said that the rising cost of living is a key consideration and for this reason has decided against introducing Clean Air Charge or to charge drivers of vehicles registered outside the capital for entering London. He said: “I believe the proposal to extend the ULEZ London-wide will have the biggest effect on emissions and congestion relative to the potential financial impact on Londoners as a whole.”

The expansion plans will be supported by a scrappage scheme designed to help charities, disabled drivers, small businesses and people on lower income to scrap their vehicles, which do not meet the ULEZ emission standards.
