Heatwave: Tips to cope in hot weather

Heatwave

According to the Met Office, the UK is bracing for another heatwave with temperatures likely to rise into the low to mid 30s Celsius for central and southern areas.

The UK Health Security Agency has issued a Level 3 Heat Health Alert in some parts of England and is urging people to look out for vulnerable people including elderly, children and those with underlying health conditions.

With this in mind, we combined a few important tips to help you cope in hot weather.

  • Drink plenty of water. Have cold food and drinks and avoid alcohol.
  • Have a cool shower and wear light and loose clothes.
  • Keep your home cool, close the windows during the day and open them at night. Draw your blinds and use a fan if you have one.
  • Avoid exercising in the heat.
  • Try to stay out of the sun, especially between 11am and 3pm. If you must go out, don’t forget to put a sunscreen, wear a hat and take a bottle of water with you.
  • Check on others, especially those most at risk.
  • Watch or listen to weather news to keep yourself informed.

If you’re driving:

  • Don’t leave children, older people or pets in the car. The temperature inside a car can double within minutes.
  • Keep an eye on engine coolant levels and check your tyres.
  • Park under shade, use a windscreen shield.
  • Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes while you drive.
  • Avoid travelling in peak times, if possible.
  • Stay hydrated.

Contact 111 if you or someone else have signs of heatstroke including: feeling unwell after 30 minutes of resting in a cool place and drinking plenty of water, not sweating even while feeling too hot.
