Birmingham’s Clean Air Zone

Clean Air Zone

On 1st of June 2021, Birmingham will be the next city after Bath to launch Clean Air Zone (CAZ), as the city is on its journey to cleaner air. Air pollution levels remain high which have harmful effects on people’s health. For this reason, there are initiatives in place such as CAZ, aimed to reduce the NO2 levels in the area and reach the air quality objectives.

Non-compliant vehicles need to pay a daily charge to drive through and within the zone. Electric vehicles are exempt due to their zero direct emissions.

Unsure if your vehicle meets the requirements, you can use the Government vehicle checker. If your vehicle doesn’t meet the requirements and you need to pay the daily charge, you can pay online.

ANPR cameras will be placed around the area, so if you don’t pay the daily charge, this will result in an additional fine of up to £120, on top of the daily charge.

The CAZ will cover all roads within the A4540 Middleway Ring Road, but not the Middleway itself. To see the map click here

The zone will operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Vehicles which don’t meet the emission standards need to pay the following daily charge to drive through the zone:

  • Cars, taxis and LGVs (vans) – £8
  • Coaches, buses and HGVs – £50

Please note, a day runs from midnight to midnight and not 24h from entering the CAZ.

If your vehicle doesn’t meet the necessary requirements and you need to pay a daily charge, there are different exemptions and incentives. For example, temporary exemption permits are available (subject to meeting full criteria) to residents, workers, commercial and community vehicles.

Vehicle Scrappage and Travel Scheme has also been launched by Birmingham City Council to provide an option for people to scrap their non-compliant vehicle (T&C apply).
