Bath’s Clean Air Zone

Clean Air Zone

Clean Air Zones are being introduced across the UK, as the government is taking steps into improving the air quality in big cities and aims to cut the pollution levels. The air pollution remains one of the major causes for many respiratory diseases such as asthma and lung cancer. Statistics show that Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) is linked to 36,000 early deaths in the UK each year. Improving the air quality is considered as one of the main priority on the UK government’s agenda, so for that reason the levels of air pollution are closely monitored.

Bath is the first city outside London to introduce Clean Air Zone (CAZ), as the city exceeds the NO2 pollution legal limits. Therefore, as of 15 March 2021 vehicles which don’t meet the emission standards have to pay a daily charge. The charge for minibuses, vans and taxis is £9, whereas trucks, lorries, busses and coaches have to pay £100. Private cars and electric vehicles are exempt.

The CAZ covers the city centre of Bath. It is believed that introducing CAZ to the city centre will have a positive impact on the surrounding areas as well. You can view a map of Bath’s clean air zone, or you can also check if a postcode is inside the zone.

Daily charge is paid by vehicles which don’t meet the emission standards. To find out if you need to pay to drive in a CAZ, or if you would like to pay a charge for a vehicle or multiple vehicles, follow the link: Drive in a clean air zone

There is a scheme in place, designed to help you replace or adapt your vehicle in order to meet the required emission standards. If you need to enter the clean zone on a regular basis, the scheme can be a cost-effective solution.

Furthermore, depending on your vehicle, you might be able to receive up to £35,000. To check your eligibility and to find out more information about the scheme, click here.

In certain situations, your vehicle can qualify to get an exemption or a discount.

For example, there are exemptions for vehicles that are hard to be replaced, or to support vulnerable groups. If your vehicle qualifies for a national exemption, you are able to drive in any clear zones without paying the daily charge.

Please note that if you successfully register your vehicle for a local exemption or discount, it is only valid to Bath’s Clean Air Zone. With this in mind, the ULEZ in London will not be included.

Although private cars are not being charged to enter into the zone, Bath & North East Somerset Council aims to promote ways to encourage drivers to consider alternatives such as public transportation, walking or cycling.

Earlier this year, we also published an article which provides information about the ULEZ which covers most of central London. For more details, follow the link: The Ultra Low Emission Zone is expanding on 25 October 2021
